Lake Shastina Fire Department is actively recruiting sleepers for the 2025/2026 COS academy school semester. Join a enthusiastic team of like minded cadets/students and immerse yourself into the fire service while serving the Lake Shastina Community as a Sleeper volunteer.

Lake Shastina sleepers come from a diverse background and skill set. Our station currently has room for up to 7 live in firefighter/paramedic cadets. Sleepers live at the station rent and utilities free. We train on Fridays and all of our sleepers are expected to participate in Duty day, which is also on Fridays. Our sleepers typically respond to a wide variety of Emergency Service calls within Lake Shastina, Mayten, Shasta Vista and Weed response areas. Sleepers are expected to learn all facets of firefighting duties including: Basic engine operations, Wildland and Structural Firefighting, Automobile extrication procedures, perform station maintenance, have full access to training and equipment, and take part in building community through public events.
The lake Shastina fire departments sleeper program is closely associated with the College of the Siskiyous fire academy and the COS paramedic program. Our goal is to better prepare you for your academy courses through training and real world experiences of being a fire fighter. Whether you are in the COS paramedic or fire academy programs, our sleeper program is a great first step in your pursuit of a career fire/ems occupation.
Sleepers also get priority on strike team assignments during the summer, which give firefighters a chance to fight Wildland fire across the state of California with the potential to earn upwards of $45,000 in a season.
